Responsible gambling

Gambling stops being a bit of fun the moment it starts deciding things for you: how much is left for the rest of the fortnight, what time you go to bed, what you tell people and what you keep to yourself. This page collects what can actually be done in Australia, starting with the parts that work.

18+ Gambling can be addictive. Under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 no operator is licensed in Australia to offer online casino games, so every site listed here is based offshore and you carry the risk yourself. Strictly 18+. You can block yourself from licensed wagering through BetStop, the National Self-Exclusion Register. Free, confidential help around the clock: Gambling Help Online, 1800 858 858.

The limits you set yourself

Every serious casino has deposit limits, loss limits and a session timer buried in the account settings. None of them are switched on by default, which makes finding them the first job after you open an account rather than the last.

One detail worth knowing: the asymmetry. Lowering a limit is usually instant; raising one is not. That delay exists precisely for the moments when nobody is deciding with a clear head. And the limit is per operator: three sites means three separate limits that add up to whatever they add up to.

BetStop, and what it does not cover

BetStop is the National Self-Exclusion Register. Registering blocks every Australian-licensed wagering service at once — the bookmakers — for three months, six months, a year, or for life, and it stops their marketing reaching you. It’s free, it takes about ten minutes, and it runs off your identity rather than your email address, so changing accounts doesn’t get around it.

What it doesn’t cover is the offshore casinos this site writes about. They aren’t licensed here, so they aren’t in the scheme. For those, the tools are the self-exclusion inside each account, blocking software on your devices, and a block on gambling transactions in your banking app — most Australian banks now offer that switch, and several of them apply the same asymmetry: instant to turn on, 48 hours to turn off.

Signals worth taking seriously

  • Betting more than you can afford to lose, even if it’s “just this month”.
  • Going back another day to win it back.
  • Borrowing money or selling something to keep playing.
  • Hiding how much you gamble from the people close to you.
  • Tension or broken sleep tied to the sessions.

Self-test

The questionnaire below follows the structure of the Canadian Problem Gambling Index: nine questions about the last twelve months. Nothing is sent to any server and it is not a diagnosis, only a tidy way of looking at your own behaviour.

The self-test needs JavaScript. Without it, the same nine questions appear in any CPGI questionnaire published by a public health body.

Where to get help

  • Gambling Help Online, 1800 858 858. Free, confidential, 24 hours, anywhere in the country. Phone or web chat, and they refer you to a counsellor in your own state.
  • Your GP. That’s where the referral to local treatment comes from, and it’s the quickest route to something ongoing rather than a one-off conversation.
  • State services. GambleAware in New South Wales, Gambler’s Help in Victoria, and the equivalent scheme in every other state and territory. All free, all funded out of gambling revenue.
  • National Debt Helpline, 1800 007 007, if the debts are the urgent part. Financial counselling is free and independent, and it runs in parallel rather than afterwards.

Under 18

Gambling is off limits to anyone under 18 everywhere in Australia. Licensed operators are obliged to verify age; offshore ones often don’t check until a withdrawal, which is exactly the problem. At home, parental controls in the operating system and on the router will block gambling domains — pair that with a conversation, because a technical block only works on the device it’s set on.

About the author: Dale Whitmore

I spent three years on the other side of the counter, running a pub gaming room in the Hunter, before I started writing about online casinos. I open the account, deposit my own money, ask for the payout and write down how long it actually takes. That is the whole method.
